Is the reason the tornados are doing so much damage because of urban sprawl?

I read in an article that was one reason. I know where I live in Canada that the suburban sprawls are enormous and stretch into the distance as far as you can see. They're eating up the countryside; they really cover a lot of space. I just wonder if thats the main reason. Whats happening with the tornados seems really unreal.
